Ever since she was a child, Alexis Templeton has admired the pearlescent surface of the inside of a mussel shell—a glowing surprise that its dark, rough, wet exterior never hints at.
She explored this duality extensively in white porcelain clay, using mother-of-pearl glazes to create the creamy lustre wrapped in a blue-black casing. On the rim, white gold stands in for the glint of sunlight.
